Babies can begin to interact/communicate with others at a very young age but it takes some time for them to be able to form words. Introducing sign language to your baby or toddler has many benefits including improved communication, reduced frustration, increased bonding and attachment, advanced language development, greater interest in books, higher IQ’s and best reason is it’s FUN!

Imagine your 1 year old signing “more milk please” or “fish” while reading a book. Giving them a way to interact using another form of vocabulary until they are able to form the sounds of verbal language can really be a life saver in understanding what they are trying to tell us and taking out the guess work.

A question that often comes up when discussing using sign language to communicate with an infant is “how will signing affect my baby’s speech development?” In fact, overwhelming majority of research shows that signing has many positive short-term and long-term effects. By age 2 most toddlers that used signing had larger vocabulary, understood more words and used longer sentences.

There are multiple places you could go to learn a few basic signs but I caution you in “just looking them up on YouTube” as this may lead to some discouragement and potentially giving up. Yes, you could learn some signs but that is only one small part of using sign language for early communication with your baby. If you don’t know when to start, when to expect your baby to sign back, how to pick starter signs, how to introduce signs and how to recognize your baby’s early attempts then you will likely hit some pretty major bumps along the road. Following a method will most likely yield faster results.
